who could also be invited by the European Commission to attend and report on

I N T R O D U C T I O N
The RE-Life project spearheaded by Cooperative Insieme and its partners has represented a tremendous opportunity to explore new pathways of economic and social development inspired by the values of degrowth and environmental and social sustainability. Indeed, as it was proclaimed at the international RE-Life workshop, “the future belongs to all of us”. In other words, to build a better and more equitable future, each one of us must work on shaping the necessary conditions for sustainable change. More importantly, the level of citizenry engagement necessary to foster such change must be nurtured by public institutions— in our case, by our City— to provide the ideal settings that allow for the emergence of ever-new opportunities for citizens to meet and exchange ideas on how to adopt lifestyles that have the least impact on our natural resources. The very concept of citizenry is far from being something ‘naturally formed’ that we can take for granted. In fact, as RE-Life has demonstrated time and again during the past months, what we call ‘citizenry’ is the outcome of a careful cultivation of social relations that manifest and develop when public institutions are involved in the eduction of their citizens to ensure that the complex web of formal and informal relations results in a network of civil conviviality.
